CE rejects foreign intervention into HK affairs

Tung Chee Hwa

Wise words: Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa speaks at a cocktail reception in honour of the National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Hong Kong delegates in Beijing.

Hong Kong people should not ask foreigners to intervene in the city's internal matters, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa says.

Speaking at a reception for Hong Kong representatives in the 10th National People's Congress in Beijing tonight, Mr Tung said he agreed with Deng Xiaoping's view that Hong Kong should be governed mainly by patriots.

He said the principle has been widely accepted in society, and everybody knows who is patriotic and who is not by looking at his or her words and deeds.

Under the One Country, Two Systems principle, he said constitutional development is an internal matter for Hong Kong and its motherland. Mr Tung said he will not accept intervention by foreigners in such matters.

Patriotism will ensure One Country, Two Systems success

Hong Kong people should not go out and seek foreign intervention in our constitutional development.

He said we must abide by principles and must be patriotic to ensure the successful implementation of One Country, Two Systems.

Mr Tung is in Beijing to brief Central Government officials on Hong Kong's latest economic, social and political developments.

Mr Tung will attend the opening ceremony of the second session of the 10th National People's Congress tomorrow.

He will meet officials from the Ministry of Commerce and the National Tourism Administration to discuss how to expedite and improve works under CEPA.

Mr Tung will also meet Guangdong officials to further strengthen co-operation between our two cities.
