Hong Kong's constitutional review will be in line with the Basic Law, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa says.

The Government will widely garner public views and make appropriate arrangements for the review which he said will be conducted next year.

Responding to some Mainland law experts' views on the issue, Mr Tung said they just wanted to show the great concern of the Central Government on the matter.

Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam believed they wanted to remind Hong Kong people of some important rules in the Basic Law regarding constitutional reform.

He said the Central Government has a role to play in the review because all suggestions concerning the selection of the Chief Executive and Legislative Council elections should have the support of the CE and legislators and approval of the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

Mr Lam urged the community and legislators to stay calm and discuss the issue according to the Basic Law. He believed that our community can reach a consensus.

The Government is now studying the review's timetable and a public consultation will be launched next year.
