The Secretary for the Civil Service has assured the Director of Audit's independence will remain when Benjamin Tang takes up the post on December 1.
Joseph Wong said this is not the first time the post has been taken up by a civil servant, so its independence should not be in question. Mr Tang will leave the Administrative Officer Grade on taking up the post, and leave the civil service when he finishes his tenure.
Mr Tang said his 29 years in the civil service will help make the Audit Commission more familiar with the Government's operation.
"I think it will certainly put me in good stead vis-a-vis my future job. I will approach my work independently, with transparency, and take the department and the community with me," he said, adding he will also co-operate with legislators.
