Plans to streamline civil service underway
*

Plans to allocate resources and streamline the civil service will be established after future manpower planning data from bureau and department heads is received at the end of the year.

Secretary for the Civil Service Joseph Wong said a review on civil service allowances will be completed by March next year. Subject to review findings, some allowances may be abolished to save spending and to be more responsive to the manpower market situation.

Speaking on a radio talk show today, Mr Wong said the Government aims to cut the size of the civil service from 174,000 people to 169,000 in 2006-07.

This is not an easy task, he said, adding that the Government will adhere to the principles of law and fairness when handling the matter, and that the outcome should be accepted by both the community and affected civil servants.

He also ruled out the possibility of having a third round of voluntary retirement.
