Indispensable: Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa says the realisation of Government policies and visions owes much to civil servants' dedication and contributions.
*

Civil servants are the Government's most important asset Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa says, adding that he is proud to be surrounded by a world-class team of professionals.

Addressing major civil service unions and departmental consultative committees at Government House today, Mr Tung said the realisation of Government policies and visions owes a lot to the dedication and contributions of its staff.

"It is in times of crisis and challenge that we come to appreciate more fully the important role that you play," he told the gathering. "Hong Kong's civil service is well-known for its professionalism, political neutrality, incorruptibility and unwavering commitment."

He said revitalising the economy and cutting the fiscal deficit are the two top priorities on our agenda, adding that "to accomplish these onerous tasks, we rely on your support and commitment".

Mr Tung said the civil service has improved its efficiency by trimming the size of the permanent establishment and providing new services.

"Economic restructuring will last some time yet, but we are already seeing promising signs of recovery. We are confident that with our determination to succeed against all odds, our quality civil service and the shared commitment of the whole community, we will scale new heights."
