Director-General of Telecommunications Anthony Wong will head the Innovation & Technology Commission from August 11.
Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology Henry Tang paid tribute to Mr Wong, 55, for his outstanding contribution in the development and implementation of the regulatory framework for Hong Kong's telecoms market.
He said liberalisation of the market and progressive regulatory measures have brought in new market players, new investment in infrastructure, facilities, and new services.
"This has in turn enhanced competition, increased choices for consumers while reducing the cost and encouraged innovation in technological application and service provision," he said.
Mr Tang noted that the authority has also set the benchmark for best practice for regulatory authorities in Asia.
"With Mr Wong's participation, Hong Kong is also able to gain considerable visibility in, and influence on, international organisations such as the International Telecommunications Union."
Mr Wong has been elected to various important positions in these forums.
Also commenting on his appointment, Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service Rebecca Lai was confident that he will be able to lead the commission in facing the challenges ahead.
Mr Wong joined the Post Office as an Assistant Telecommunications Engineer in September 1974, and was promoted to Assistant Postmaster General in July 1988.
In March 1994, he was posted to the authority as Senior Assistant Director of Telecommunications. He has been the Director-General of Telecommunications since April 1997.
Deputy Director-General of Telecommunications Au Man-ho will act as Director-General.
