Commissioner for Labour Pamela Tan will take up the post of Director of Home Affairs on June 30.
The post was vacated by Shelley Lee who became Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs last July.
Commenting on the appointment, Secretary for the Civil Service Joseph Wong said: "Mrs Tan is an experienced Administrative Officer with proven leadership and good management skills. We are confident she can lead the department in meeting its challenges ahead."
Aged 47, Mrs Tan joined the Government in October 1977 and rose to her present rank of Administrative Officer Staff Grade A last July.
She has served in various bureaux and departments, including the former Social Services Branch, the Social Welfare Department, the former Finance Branch, the former Regional Services Department, the former Deputy Chief Secretary's Office, the former Trade & Industry Branch, the former Civil Service Branch, the former Monetary Affairs Branch and the Central Policy Unit.
She was Commissioner of Insurance from December 1994 to August 1995, Deputy Secretary for Financial Services from September 1995 to February 1996, Director of the Mandatory Provident Fund Office from March 1996 to February 1999, and Director of Administration & Development in the Department of Justice from February 1999 to June 2000.
She has been Commissioner for Labour since June 2000.
