The Chief Executive values Hong Kong people's opinions and has adopted ways to gauge public views, Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho says.
Responding to a question raised by Legislative Councillor Emily Lau today, Dr Ho said Tung Chee Hwa frequently reads local and international newspapers, listens to and watches radio and television news and current affairs programmes.
Dr Ho noted that Mr Tung also gauges public views directly in the following ways:
*in meetings with representatives from the labour, business and political sectors, academics and professionals;
*through visits to the districts to meet the public, in housing estates, markets, shopping arcades, schools, youth and elderly centres, voluntary and social welfare agencies, and
*by attending ceremonies, receptions and seminars.
The amount of time Mr Tung spends each week on average on these activities depends on the needs and his schedule, but gauging public views does account for a substantial proportion of his working hours, Dr Ho added.
