Nominations for the first village representative polls will open on June 3, after election guidelines came into force today.
Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Mr Justice Woo Kwok-hing advised election hopefuls to read the guidelines before declaring their candidature or filing nominations.
"Comprehensive electoral procedures and rules are set out in the guidelines, which candidates, agents, electors, media and villagers must follow," Mr Justice Woo said.
The guidelines are applicable to all future village representative elections and by-elections.
Polls will be conducted every Saturday and Sunday for six consecutive weekends between July 12 and August 17. A total of 787 indigenous village representatives and 693 resident representatives will be elected for 707 villages.
Noting that civil servants can engage in village representative elections as candidates or agents, or can assist in electioneering activities, Mr Justice Woo reminded that they should avoid real or apparent conflicts of interest with their official duties, and abuse of public resources.
"To avoid any unfairness, semblance of unfairness or conflicts of interest, civil servants who work in a village or have extensive contacts with the public in a village are strongly advised not to participate in electioneering activities," he added.
