Voter registration campaign set for June 1
*

A voter registration campaign will be held on June 1 for the District Council election set for November 23.

The $8.4-million campaign will cover various types of activities to encourage eligible people to register as electors, and keep their records updated, with the Registration & Electoral office between June 1 and July 16.

Deputy Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Joseph Lai said in the Legislative Council today that this year's campaign will be targetted at young people.

According to the latest final voter register published in May last year, only 19% of the 2.9 million registered voters belonged to the 18-20 age group, while that for the 21-25 age group was 52%.

In this regard, three mini-concerts will be organised to boost youngsters' participation while four outdoor shows will be run in housing estates to get voters to update their records.

Octopus cardholders and bookstore discount cards will be presented to newly registered voters and those who have updated their records as a token of appreciation.

In the 2000 Voter Registration Campaign, over 90,000 new voters registered and 170,000 voters updated their records.
