Vehicle reg mark allocation updated

January 22, 2025

The Transport Department today announced the arrangements for allocating traditional vehicle registration marks (TVRMs) upon exhausting the “ZZ” series.

The department explained that under the existing system, except for some series of letter prefixes reserved for specific purposes, it assigns to a registered vehicle the letter prefix from “AA” to “ZZ” in ascending alphabetical order, followed by numerals randomly selected by a computer system.

It also pointed out that it is now allocating the TVRMs under the “ZV” series, and expects to start assigning the “ZZ” ones in February or March.

Upon exhausting the “ZZ” series, the department said it will, using the existing format, allot TVRMs previously returned to the department but not yet reallocated to other vehicles.

The allocation will start from the “WA” series in reverse alphabetical order, ie from the “WA” to the “WZ” series, followed by the “VA” to the “VZ” series, and so on.

The department indicated that to date, about three million of such TVRMs are yet to be reallocated, adding it is projected that they are sufficient to meet the demand in the next two decades.

It further stated that it has finished enhancing its computer system to tie in with the above arrangements.
