Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry Prof Sun Dong (first right) visits the large-scale Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility in the Zhangjiang High-tech Park.

Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry Prof Sun Dong visited various technology facilities on the final day of his Shanghai trip today.

Prof Sun explored the Zhangjiang Science City's Life Science Hub to discover more about the three 10-year development history of an innovative research and development (R&D) system of the science city, serving as the core area of technology innovation in Shanghai and a national-level technology hub.

He also learnt about the experiences and practices of the science city in areas of industry layout, incubation and academic-industry collaboration as well as its important findings and initiatives focusing on innovation planning and the realisation of driving new quality productive forces, especially in leading technology innovation and high-quality industry development in the field of life sciences.

While inspecting the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility in the Zhangjiang High-tech Park, the tech chief was briefed on this national large-scale integrated experimental research platform which supports cutting-edge basic research in life sciences, condensed matter physics, materials science, chemistry, energy and environmental sciences, and high-tech R&D.

Prof Sun then visited the ATLATL Center for Innovation & Research where he toured the shared laboratories, office incubation space and the public service platform.

This vertically integrated life technology research cluster integrates an R&D centre, accelerated transfer and early-stage incubation, which provides robust solutions for technology enterprises.

Apart from exchanging views with the management of the innovation and research cluster on issues including the setting up of professional platforms, service operation modes and company incubation, Prof Sun encouraged the cluster to come to Hong Kong to further expand its accelerator businesses.

Part of his agenda called for examining the assembly manufacturing centre of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). While there, he was given information about the corporation's latest development plan, product planning and corporate culture.

Both sides exchanged views on Hong Kong's strength in innovation and technology development as well as scientific and research collaboration with COMAC.

After wrapping up his business trip, Prof Sun returned to Hong Kong this afternoon.
