Vehicle licence enhanced

December 30, 2024

The Transport Department announced today that it has enhanced the vehicle licence (VL) and simplified the documentation requirements with respect to VL applications, in order to offer applicants greater convenience.

From now on, the department will issue a VL without an expiry date printed on it to vehicle owners who successfully renew their VL. A notice showing the latest validity period of the VL will also be handed to these vehicle owners.

The department explained that vehicle owners, after obtaining the new VL, can continue to use the same VL after each subsequent renewal, provided that the vehicle particulars remain unchanged. In other words, they will not need to replace the VL displayed on their vehicle's windscreen.

Users can scan the QR code printed on the VL to access the Vehicle Licence Online Enquiry Platform and check the expiry date. The department will also issue renewal reminders to vehicle owners before their VLs expire.

Separately, the department announced that starting from today vehicle owners, when applying for a VL renewal, are no longer required to present a Vehicle Registration Document or Certificate of Roadworthiness after passing the vehicle examination.

Furthermore, when submitting a VL renewal application online, once a third party risks insurance record is verified via the backend support of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers, there is no need to upload the insurance policy.
