Mid-autumn moon times revealed

September 4, 2024

This year’s Mid-Autumn Festival will fall on September 17, with the full moon occurring on the morning of the next day, the Hong Kong Observatory announced today.

If the weather permits, a bright and round “super moon” with Saturn in its close proximity will also be observable during the Mid-Autumn Festival period, the Observatory highlighted.

The Space Museum will hold an online activity on September 14 to share tips on moon observation and introduce the astronomical phenomenon “Saturn-moon Conjunction”.

Moonrise on September 17 will be at 5.58pm. The moon will be at its highest at 11.57pm and set at 6.02am the next morning.

The Observatory added that while a partial lunar eclipse will be visible from South America during the full moon, including most parts of North America, Europe, Africa and western Asia, the phenomenon will not be visible in Hong Kong.
