August 21, 2024

A welcome home reception for the Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was held at the Central Government Offices to congratulate the delegation for their outstanding achievements and express gratitude to the coaches as well as medical teams.

Thirty-five Hong Kong athletes competed in 13 events at the Paris Olympic Games and achieved historic results. Chief Executive John Lee officiated at today’s reception and presented certificates of commendation to the athletes.

In his speech, apart from stating that the Hong Kong athletes showcased their abilities in the Paris Olympic Games, Mr Lee pointed out that their achievements were most heartening.

In addition to winning a total of four medals, two gold and two bronze, in fencing and swimming events, the athletes also advanced to the semi-finals in table tennis, and reached the quarter-finals in badminton and taekwondo, he highlighted.

Moreover, he praised the sportspersons for their excellent performance in rowing, judo, gymnastics, sailing, windsurfing, triathlon, athletics and cycling. It was also noted that some athletes achieved Hong Kong’s best ever Olympic results or their personal bests, with many of them ranking top among Asian competitors.

The Chief Executive stressed that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will spare no effort in training local sports talent and promoting sports development in Hong Kong, including comprehensive planning, development and optimisation of sports facilities.

In this regard, the new building project of the Hong Kong Sports Institute is forthcoming, and the Kai Tak Sports Park is expected to be commissioned next year.

Noting that the 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games will be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau next year, Mr Lee emphasised that the Hong Kong SAR Government is actively working with its counterparts to host the National Games, the nation’s highest-level sports event, successfully.

Separately, a bus parade was held for the Hong Kong athletes this morning, drawing citizens who welcomed and cheered them on. The athletes then had a sharing session with students on the Olympic experience at Tamar Park.

At noon, the Chief Executive hosted a luncheon at Government House to commend the athletes and delegation members for their outstanding achievements and efforts during the Olympic Games.
