Mid-year population at 7.53m

August 15, 2024

Hong Kong’s population was 7,531,800 in the middle of the year, down 0.1% from mid-2023 but up 0.1% from the end of 2023, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

There were 34,400 births and 52,400 deaths from mid-2023 to mid-2024.

Over the same period, a net inflow of 13,800 Hong Kong residents was recorded. This involved an inflow of 44,000 one-way permit holders and a net outflow of 30,200 other Hong Kong residents.

Remarking that there had been a sizable inflow of people from the Mainland and other places around the world to Hong Kong in the six months from the end of 2023, the Government said this was in step with various measures on talent attraction and labour importation.

It added that in early 2023, with the full resumption of normal travel, many Hong Kong residents living abroad began returning to the city for short durations, resulting in a notable increase in the population in mid-2023 compared to a year earlier. It explained that the situation then reverted to normalcy throughout the later part of 2023, resulting in a slight decline in the population as recorded at the end of 2023 and mid-2024, compared to mid-2023.

In mid-2024 there were 7,287,400 usual residents of Hong Kong, and 244,400 mobile residents.
