9 tropical cyclone names added

Nine new tropical cyclone names have been added to this year's list for typhoons in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea, the Hong Kong Observatory announced today.

 

They are Jamjari, Tsing-ma, Tokei, Ong-mang, Amuyao, Gosari, Hodu, Sarbul and Luc-Binh.

 

Jamjari, from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, represents a dragonfly.

 

Tsing-ma is a landmark bridge connecting the airport and urban areas in Hong Kong, China.

 

Tokei, from Japan, represents horologium and clock.

 

Ong-mang, from Lao PDR, is the name of an animal, Eld's Deer, which is listed as rare and endangered of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and endangered species of Lao PDR.

 

Amuyao, from the Philippines, is a mountain in the Mountain Province of the country.

 

The Republic of Korea's Gosari and Hodu mean bracken and walnut.

 

Sarbul, from Micronesia, means monsoon or rainy season.

 

Luc-Binh, from Vietnam, is an aquatic plant, Eichhoriaceae crassipes solms, having purple flowers that bloom year-round.

 

The United Nations Economic & Social Commission for Asia & the Pacific/World Meteorological Organization Typhoon Committee endorsed  the names at the committee’s 56th session.

 

They will replace the names of Nalgae, Ma-on, Kompasu, Hinnamnor, Malakas, Megi, Noru, Rai and Conson.

 

The committee will consider retiring names of tropical cyclones which have caused serious casualties and economic losses.

 

Additionally, Malakas, which is considered to contain an inappropriate meaning in other languages, was retired.
