Bun festival captivates crowds

May 15, 2024

The Cheung Chau Bun Festival was held today, attracting thousands of locals and tourists to the island for fun-filled events.

The festival, which is on the national list of intangible cultural heritage, originates from a traditional ritual to expel bad spirits.

Its highlights include the Grand Parade and Bun Scrambling Competition.

Crowds were captivated by the parade which set off from Pak Tai Temple Playground in the afternoon, with children balancing on poles dressed in colourful costumes along with lion dancers.

Some of the creative costumes featured Hong Kong's top athletes, including fencer Edgar Cheung and swimmer Siobhan Haughey, as well as historical figures, fairytale characters or police officers promoting anti-scam messages.

The festival culminated with the annual Bun Scrambling Competition, with 12 finalists climbing a tower to snatch as many buns as possible.
