In view of the current construction process, the Government expects that Kai Tak Sports Park’s major facilities will be completed by the end of 2024, Acting Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Raistlin Lau told lawmakers today.

Test runs and test events will be arranged when the construction works, as well as defect rectification and statutory testing are completed, he said, adding that upon satisfactory completion of various testing procedures, Kai Tak Sports Park will be open in the first half of 2025.

A venue booking mechanism that will include creating priority arrangements for sports activities is being formulated, he highlighted.

As the largest sports infrastructure project in Hong Kong to date, the 28-hectare sports park will bring impetus to the Government’s commitments to promoting sports in the community, supporting elite sports, maintaining Hong Kong as a centre for major international sports events, enhancing professionalism, and developing sports as an industry.

Mr Lau said: “It will not only support the comprehensive sports development in Hong Kong, but also stimulate economic development, thereby consolidating Hong Kong’s status in the world.”

Separately, with the 15th National Games due to be co-hosted in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau in 2025, Mr Lau stressed that Hong Kong citizens, people living in the Greater Bay Area, and even sports lovers from all parts of the Mainland, will be able to view high-level sports events in Hong Kong.

“With some of the competitions to be staged in Kai Tak Sports Park, we believe that sports exchange between the citizens in Hong Kong and the bay area will be even more frequent.”

Kai Tak Sports Park will be one of the major sports venues in the bay area, and will provide a new platform for promoting Hong Kong’s overall sports development, Mr Lau added.
