Deputy Secretary for Justice Cheung Kwok-kwan (first row, centre) meets CPC Huizhou Municipal Committee United Front Work Department Executive Deputy Head Zhong Yonglan (first row, sixth right).

Deputy Secretary for Justice Cheung Kwok-kwan and a delegation comprising young lawyers and law students today visited a youth entrepreneurship base and a law firm in Huizhou to explore development opportunities for Hong Kong’s legal services sector in the city.

They toured the Huizhou Zhongkai Hong Kong-Macao Youth Entrepreneurship Base this morning and met with CPC Huizhou Municipal Committee United Front Work Department Executive Deputy Head and Huizhou Municipality’s Bureau of Taiwan, Hong Kong & Macao Affairs Director Zhong Yonglan.

At an experience sharing session, representatives from Mainland start-ups discussed the challenges they face with the young Hong Kong delegates, in addition to the legal services and support they need for their business development.

In the afternoon, Mr Cheung and the Hong Kong lawyers and students visited a well-established Mainland law firm and held in-depth exchanges with their local counterparts on the challenges around handling cross-boundary civil, commercial and arbitration matters. The parties also discussed strengthening co-operation between the legal sectors in both places.

Afterwards, Mr Cheung and the delegation returned to Hong Kong.

Mr Cheung said a planned visit to Shenzhen had been cancelled at the last minute due to extreme weather conditions, but added that the visit to Huizhou had demonstrated the Department of Justice’s commitment to connecting with young lawyers.

He highlighted that it also allowed young Hong Kong solicitors, barristers and law students to understand more about the opportunities in developing the legal services market in the Mainland, the challenges arising from foreign-related legal matters faced by enterprises, and the positive role Hong Kong legal professionals can play in contributing to the Greater Bay Area’s and the country’s rule of law.
