Shing Mun Tunnels to use HKeToll

May 18, 2023

To tie in with the implementation of the HKeToll at Shing Mun Tunnels from 5am on May 21, temporary traffic arrangements will be imposed in phases in the vicinity from 11.30pm on May 20, the Transport Department said today.

Both directions of Shing Mun Tunnels will be closed from 4.30am to 5am on May 21 to facilitate the works concerning closing the toll booth facilities and amending traffic signs and road markings that will be provided on-site to guide motorists.

Overnight bus routes NA40, NA41 and N42A and overnight green minibus route No. 482 will be diverted via Tai Wai Tunnel, Sha Tin Heights Tunnel and Eagle’s Nest Tunnel.

Taxi passengers travelling between Tsuen Wan and Sha Tin via Shing Mun Tunnels are advised to take urban taxis.

As of yesterday, over 720,000 vehicle tags have been issued, accounting for about 89% of licensed vehicles in Hong Kong, of which about 76% of vehicle owners have opened HKeToll accounts.

To fully enjoy the HKeToll’s convenience, the department appeals to vehicle owners to complete the three steps for HKeToll service as soon as possible. This requires installing a vehicle tag, opening a HKeToll account and setting up an automatic payment means.

Separately, the department pointed out that vehicle owners who have used the Tsing Sha Control Area without paying the toll after the HKeToll’s implementation will receive an electronic notification on the seventh business day after passing through the tunnel.

The notification is a reminder that they must pay the toll within 14 business days after passing through the tunnel. The department also noted that late payments will incur a surcharge.

Following Shing Mun Tunnels, the HKeToll will be implemented at Lion Rock Tunnel from 5am on May 28, the department added.
