Tung Chung market opens
Secretary for Environment & Ecology Tse Chin-wan today officiated at the opening ceremony of Sunlight Market in Tung Chung.
With 36 market stalls selling wet and dry goods and simple cooked food, the public market at Fu Tung Street offers residents an additional place to purchase fresh food.
Apart from pointing out that the market project is both citizen-based and district-based while speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tse stressed that it meets the community needs.
He added that public markets are important livelihood facilities and the Government will continue its efforts in taking forward market development projects, with a view to keeping such markets abreast with the times to meet the needs of citizens.
Formerly known as Tung Chung Temporary Market, Sunlight Market has an area of about 2,275 sq m and was built using the modular integrated construction method.
In addition to the signature architectural design of the canopy, the market’s outer appearance features traits of Tai O stilt houses and fishing villages to highlight the Islands District’s community characteristics.
As an added attribute, place-making and greening elements are integrated in the market area to enable the public to rest and enjoy.
The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department said the service contractor’s role in managing the market will be strengthened in order to enhance business vibrancy and meet people’s needs.
Under this new management model, the contractor will be involved in formulating promotion and development strategies and more.
