Vote counting process explained
Vote counting for the 2021 Legislative Council General Election was completed this morning, about 11 hours after the polls closed, the Electoral Affairs Commission said.
The counting process finished at 9.56am with about 1,350,680 geographical constituency, 70,490 functional constituency and 1,426 Election Committee constituency ballot papers having been counted.
The election results for each of the constituencies were announced afterwards.
Speaking to reporters after tallying up the votes, Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Barnabas Fung explained that despite some minor glitches, the election ran steadily overall.
“The voting and counting processes are, by and large, very smooth today. Of course, there were about 11 polling stations where there were teething problems with the Electronic Poll Register system, such as we had to reboot the machines and sometimes a fuse had gone off and things like that, but they were matters which had been resolved within 10 or 15 minutes and we had added extra time for voting.
“We have to take it that it is, by and large, very smooth, given that such an extensive system was implemented in over 630 polling stations with connectivity and everything completed within two or three days before the polling day.”
The Electoral Affairs Commission will review the electoral arrangements made for the poll and submit a report to the Chief Executive within three months as prescribed by the law.
