Carbon neutrality partnerships set

October 29, 2021

The Environment Bureau held the Carbon Neutrality Partnership Launching Ceremony today.

About 60 partners from sectors including property development, public utilities, finance and professional bodies attended the ceremony, pledging support for Hong Kong's goal of achieving carbon neutrality before 2050.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the Government attaches great importance to deep decarbonisation for achieving carbon neutrality before 2050.

Since earlier this year, Mrs Lam has been chairing a new Steering Committee on Climate Change & Carbon Neutrality to formulate the overall strategy and oversee the co‑ordination of interdepartmental actions.

The Office of Climate Change & Carbon Neutrality will be set up to further promote full participation by the Government and the public in transforming towards decarbonisation.

The Chief Executive noted that in the next 15 to 20 years, the Government will devote about $240 billion to take forward measures on climate change adaptation.

She called on the partners to further deepen and accelerate their pace in pursuing low-carbon transformation to set examples for society, drive the green economy, create more green employment opportunities and promote climate action.

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong pointed out that the Government this month announced Hong Kong's Climate Action Plan 2050, setting out the vision of Zero-carbon Emissions ‧ Liveable City ‧ Sustainable Development and outlining four major decarbonisation strategies and measures: net-zero electricity generation, energy saving and green buildings, green transport and waste reduction.

Mr Wong encouraged the partners to set their targets and timetables, and share with the public their decarbonisation measures and outcomes.

Initial data shows that about 70% of Carbon Neutrality partners had set or planned to set carbon neutrality targets. The bureau will update the progress of the Carbon Neutrality partners programme in a timely manner.

During the ceremony, the bureau appointed Hong Kong cycling athlete Lee Wai-sze as Carbon Neutrality Ambassador.

It will continue to step up promotion and education on climate change to encourage participation of the community in pursuing deep decarbonisation.
