HK claims 4th Olympic medal
Hong Kong table tennis athletes Lee Ho-ching, Doo Hoi-kem, Soo Wai-yam and Zhu Chengzhu claimed bronze in the Women’s table tennis match at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
This is the fourth medal nabbed by the Hong Kong, China Delegation in the Tokyo Games, and the second time the delegation has won an Olympic medal in a table tennis competition, following a silver medal-winning performance in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam today wholeheartedly congratulated the athletes.
She said: “I am moved by the great perseverance and tenacity displayed by the Hong Kong table tennis team in the competition.
“Though they have gone through ups and downs in their previous competitions, they continued to demonstrate solidarity. Their full engagement in the team competition deserves our great respect.”
Li Ching, who was one of the silver medallists in the Men's Doubles of the Athens games, is the team’s coach.
Mrs Lam noted that this shows the great tradition of athletes who pass the baton to younger generations.
She added that she hopes Hong Kong athletes can continue to achieve outstanding results in the remaining competitions and bring glory to the city.
Secretary for Home Affairs Caspar Tsui also lauded the team’s outstanding performance.
“We should praise and learn from their determination towards greatness. We are proud of them.”
