Kai Tak Sky Garden opens

May 21, 2021

The Kai Tak Sky Garden opened today, the Civil Engineering & Development Department announced.

The new landmark, situated at the former Kai Tak Airport runway, is Hong Kong’s first sky garden built on curved and wavy noise barriers. It spans about 1.4 km and is about two hectares in size.

The sky garden will connect to the future Metro Park to the north, the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, the Kai Tak Runway Park and the future Tourism Node development to the south.

It will also connect to the planned developments on both sides of the garden and the promenade on both sides of the former runway.

Encapsulating the theme of aviation, the sky garden will give visitors a sense of nostalgia for the old days of the former airport.

More than 80 trees and shrub species are planted in the garden, of which the corridor is divided into four zones around the themes of spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The sky garden features three elevated plazas, the Garden Plaza, the Lawn Plaza and the Fountain Plaza, each with unique characteristics. Additionally, the Ground Plaza has an amphitheatre that can be used for leisure and recreational activities.

From now to November 30, visitors can take interesting photos, using 3D augmented reality, to enrich their experience at check-in spots in the sky garden.
