97 national security arrests made
Police today said 97 people have been arrested, of which eight have been prosecuted, for national security-related offences since the National Security Law's enactment in June 2020.
Reviewing Hong Kong's law and order situation in 2020, Police Commissioner Tang Ping-keung noted that it is too soon to gauge whether the prosecution rate is low.
“So far, we have arrested 90-plus people for national security-related offences. National security-related offences are very serious offences, we need to investigate them thoroughly. We need more time to process all those cases in order to gather the evidence required for prosecution.
“As you may recall, the National Security Law was only enacted on June 30, 2020. It is still too early to say the prosecution rate is low because a lot of cases are still under active investigation.”
