December cloudier, drier than usual
The Hong Kong Observatory today announced that December was cloudier and drier than usual.
The mean amount of cloud in the month was 62%, 10% above normal. Total rainfall for the month was only 1.5 mm, about 6% of the normal figure. The annual total rainfall in 2020 was 2395mm, similar to the annual normal figure of 2398.5mm.
The monthly mean temperature of 18.1 degrees Celsius was 0.2 degrees above normal.
With plenty of sunshine, the temperature soared to 24.5 degrees Celsius on the afternoons of December 27 and 29, the highest of the month.
Meanwhile, a cold front moved across southern China on the night of December 29.
It was cold, windy and very dry on New Year's Eve with the temperature dropping to 8.1 degrees Celsius in the morning, the lowest of the month. The temperature at Tai Mo Shan even dropped to minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.
