Acting CE visits emergency centre
Acting Chief Executive Matthew Cheung today visited the Security Bureau's Emergency Monitoring & Support Centre to understand the latest position of Tropical Cyclone Nangka and the measures and work undertaken by relevant departments and agencies.
Nangka is the second tropical cyclone with the No. 8 gale or storm signal issued by the Hong Kong Observatory this year.
In order to cope with the potentially serious threats brought about by typhoons, relevant government departments have been well prepared, including an inter-departmental pre-typhoon table-top exercise held by the Security Bureau in May that tested the preparedness, response and recovery capabilities of pertinent bureaus and departments.
As the threat level of typhoons hitting Hong Kong could be affected by various factors, the departments have stayed in close liaison since the exercise to facilitate the Government's assessment of the situation and draw up response plans and measures.
Mr Cheung expressed appreciation to colleagues and staff in other organisations for staying vigilant in discharging their duties and closely monitoring the situation in all districts with a view to taking immediate action to handle emergencies to protect the lives and property of Hong Kong people.
Mr Cheung urged people to take proper precautionary measures, stay at safe places and pay close attention to the Government's latest information on the tropical cyclone.
The centre is activated when the No. 8 gale or storm signal is hoisted to co-ordinate the resources and emergency response operations across various government departments.
