New appointment:

Ada Chung will serve as Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data from September 4.

The Government today announced the appointment of Ada Chung as the new Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data with effect from September 4.

The appointment, for a term of five years, was made by the Chief Executive under section 5 of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.

The Government said Ms Chung, 61, has solid legal expertise and administrative experience, as well as excellent leadership, management and communication skills.

Ms Chung, with her past legal and administrative experience, will take the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data to a new height, it added.

Serving commissioner Stephen Wong’s term of office will expire on August 3.

Noting that Mr Wong has made important contributions to the protection of personal data privacy both locally and internationally during his tenure, the Government expressed heartfelt gratitude to his service in the past five years.

After the expiry of the incumbent's term of appointment, the Deputy Privacy Commissioner will act as commissioner until Ms Chung assumes office.

An open recruitment exercise was conducted early this year to select the new Privacy Commissioner and a selection board was appointed to consider the candidates and make a recommendation to the Chief Executive.
