The Government unveiled the Hong Kong Cancer Strategy with the goal of reducing the cancer burden of the local population and improving the quality of life and survivorship of cancer patients by setting work priorities and directions.
Releasing the strategy’s details today, Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan called it the city’s first holistic plan for cancer prevention and control.
“When we look at this comprehensive plan, actually there are some key areas.”
The Cancer Strategy aims to reduce cancer risk factors by providing evidence-based screening, encouraging early detection and diagnosis, as well as offering timely and effective treatment.
It also seeks to strengthen support for cancer survivors, provide end-of-life care, and invest in cancer technology. The strategy includes improving co-operation among Government bureaus and departments, the Hospital Authority and community organisations, as well as enhancing surveillance and research capabilities.
“We are working very hard towards reducing the four modifiable risk factors, in particular, in order to prevent cancer.”
“Of course, screening is another highlight, but screening requires evidence to support evidence-based screening, so we would have to look at the evidence.”
Regarding cancer detection, Prof Chan cited the use of advanced technology equipment, improvements to cancer drugs and building new cancer centres as important elements of early detection and treatment in the strategy.
The health chief also emphasised the need to do more to nurture and improve the lives of those battling cancer.
“As the population ages and we have a longer life expectancy, we have better survival rates with better treatment, then people live longer even when they have cancer.”
“Therefore we would have to strengthen our work with cancer survivors, providing better care and also improving their quality of life.”
