Chinese University Professor Shao Qiman has won the second-class State Natural Science Awards 2015, the National Office for Science & Technology Awards announced today.
Prof Shao's winning research project on "Self-normalised Limit Theory & Stein's Method" belongs to the field of probability and statistics, and was nominated by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
The Education Bureau congratulated Prof Shao, noting that his outstanding achievements highlighted Hong Kong's excellent capabilities in basic and applied research, and served as motivation to fellow researchers.
Prof Shao's findings have been widely used in high dimensional statistical inference and in controlling the false discovery rate, and might also play an important role in big data statistical analysis.
The winning project was completed at Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. HKUST's Prof Jing Bingyi is another core project team member.
As the country's most prestigious award in natural science, its goal is to reward individuals for academic excellence in basic and applied natural science research.
