Homeschooling is no substitute for a proper school education, Secretary for Education Eddie Ng says, adding parents must ensure their children attend school.
He made the statement today in response to media reports that some parents choose homeschooling instead of mainstream education.
Mr Ng said the Government provides nine years of free schooling to ensure each Hong Kong child receives an all-round education.
Schools provide a broad and systematic curriculum, and give students a social life with their peers and counselling from teachers, he added.
On the lead-tainted water issue, Mr Ng said an inter-departmental working group will meet on August 27 to discuss the need for water tests at schools.
The Education Bureau has sent an advisory to all schools on the lead-water issue.
