Eddie Ng starts Indonesian trip
(December 16, 2013)
Secretary for Education Eddie Ng began his Indonesian visit today by touring schools, and meeting their management and students. The trip is to promote educational co-operation between Hong Kong and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states.
Mr Ng toured the Universitas Pelita Harapan campus, and held talks with its management on co-operation opportunities in tertiary education between Indonesia and Hong Kong.
There are five exchange agreements and two research collaborations between the eight University Grants Committee-funded institutions in Hong Kong and Indonesia.
He said 175 Indonesian students were studying in UGC-funded programmes in 2012-13, adding there is room for further development as student exchange activities between the two places were not very active in the past.
He encouraged the country's university sector to send students to Hong Kong for further education and exchange activities.
Mr Ng later joined exchange activities at SMA Negeri 8 - a public high school in Jakarta – with 100 visiting Hong Kong teachers and students. He encouraged the students to treasure the opportunity to broaden their horizons.
Tonight Mr Ng will meet a group of local community leaders from Hong Kong.
