CS happy hunger strike has ended
September 09, 2012
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam is pleased opponents of national education have ended their protests, particularly the hunger strike, and says allegations that the Government might later amend the policy to impose a deadline were groundless.
Speaking to the media today, Mrs Lam said the Government will act to quell society’s doubts. She was glad the week-long action outside Central Government Offices had come to an end and hoped those who had staged a hunger strike would resume eating and regain their health.
She said the Government had heard the protesters' views and believed the amendment the Chief Executive announced yesterday is an active response to those views.
After the incident, the Government had undertaken to uphold the principles of leaving education matters to the education sector, and having respect for the autonomy of school-sponsoring bodies and schools, she added.
Allegations that the Government might later amend the policy to impose an implementation deadline, exert undue pressure or make use of financial incentives to force schools to implement this subject, were fictitious and groundless, she stressed.
Mrs Lam reiterated the Government's respect for schools' autonomy. She said the political team will continue to support the Chief Executive, to address livelihood issues and improve Hong Kong society.
