CS urges right focus on national studies

September 03, 2012
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says the question of national studies cannot be simplified as to whether or not the Government is prepared to withdraw the subject, adding the focus should be to ensure the subject's objectives will be achieved.

Speaking to the media today, Mrs Lam said the objective is very commendable as it basically seeks to nurture the younger generation to have the right attitude in life, towards family and society, to know about the country, and to be a responsible global citizen.

“Since there is nothing wrong with these objectives, the important thing is to ensure that the public concern, or the parents’ and the students’ worries, about so called brain-washing will not happen.”

She added it will only be achievable by more communication with various stakeholders, trusting the school sponsoring authority and schools in devising their own teaching materials, engaging teachers, and talking to parents about how this subject should be taught.

Mrs Lam said the Government has responded to the people’s concern and set up the Committee on Implementation of Moral & National Education. She urged people to join the committee to express their views.

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng echoed the call, saying he hopes the committee’s first meeting can be held soon.
