Secretary for Security TK Lai has urged the public to support the fire officers fighting the Ngau Tau Kok blaze and not criticise them.
He made the statement today in response to criticism of the Fire Service Department's handling of the blaze.
He said all firefighters have received professional training and they have the knowledge and ability to assess the situation and decide the appropriate action at the scene.
Officer safety is the department's top priority, he said, calling on the public to consider the danger and uncertainty involved in firefighting.
Mr Lai rejected suggestions that officers stop fighting the fire, saying the idea is "irresponsible" as it threatens lives and property in neighbouring buildings.
There is no need to evacuate the entire neighbourhood as yet, however, the situation will be monitored, he added.
