Police determined to maintain order

October 02, 2014

Protesters’ plans to escalate their action by surrounding Government buildings will only intensify the deadlock with authorities and cause more disruption to people’s daily lives.

Police Public Relations Branch Chief Superintendent Steve Hui told the media today that Police will not tolerate any illegal surrounding or charging of Government buildings.

Mr Hui said the force will remain resolute and devoted to maintaining public order and safety, and use of appropriate force cannot be ruled out.

Responding to media reports on the use of teargas on Sunday, Mr Hui said it was used to disperse crowds and not to injure people, adding its effects, such as a hot sensation and tears, are temporary and will not have a permanent effect.

Police followed international standards in using the teargas and gave sufficient warnings before its use.

He said the barricades protestors have erected at various locations to block roads have affected emergency services and Police officers cannot reach scenes to handle cases promptly.

He appealed to protesters to leave the roads in an orderly and peaceful manner as soon as possible so traffic can resume.
