10 arrested for formula smuggling

Customs officers have arrested 10 people in North District for smuggling powdered infant formula over the past two days.
Those arrested include eight men and two women, aged 26 to 58. Officers seized 110 tins of powdered formula weighing 99 kilograms, worth about $27,500.
Three smuggling syndicates were shut down at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Points.
Customs officers this morning found a syndicate using a van for mobile storage of powdered formula near the Sheung Shui MTR station. Officers seized 50 tins of powdered formula weighing 45 kilograms, worth $12,500.
Customs officers also found a syndicate using coin-style storage lockers inside some shopping malls in North District for temporary storage of powdered formula today. They found a total of 48 tins of powdered formula weighing 43.2 kilograms, worth $12,000.
Customs officers yesterday found a smuggling mastermind distributing powdered formula to smugglers at the public transport interchange in the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point.
The smugglers will be charged for attempting to export unlicensed powdered formula, while the masterminds will be charged for assisting them.
