Drug offences drop 26%

The number of serious narcotics offences dropped 25.8% to 1,856 in the first 10 months of the year, showing the Government’s work in tackling the drug problem is working well, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says.

 

Speaking after the Fight Crime Committee meeting today, he said the number of drug offenders fell 25% and the number of youngsters arrested for narcotics offences dropped 30%. The number of young people arrested for various crimes also went down 10%.

 

Reviewing the crime situation for the year's first 10 months, Mr Lee said overall crime dropped 3.2% to 62,634 cases, and there were 11,386 violent crime cases, down 4.2%.

 

Declining crimes included shoplifting (-6.7%), robberies (-11.7%), and wounding and serious assault (-7.2%). However, there were increases in indecent assaults (+13.4%), pickpocketing (+30.9%), and miscellaneous theft (+2.2%).

 

Mr Lee said the crime and law-and-order situation in Hong Kong is stable, adding Police will continue to monitor crime trends.
