The Drainage Services Department today introduced the features that helped the Kowloon City No. 1 Sewage Pumping Station become the first government facility to win the BEAM Plus Platinum Rating.
What sets the pumping station apart from its conventional counterparts is that its design is intended to create an "Oasis for the Soul" which displays the Kai Tak Development Area's features, natural beauty and energy.
Its architects say the BEAM Plus green building design concept was adopted in the overall design and include beautiful landscape features such as a green roof, a skylight and a natural ventilation system, as well as solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system to make the pumping station more energy efficient and sustainable.
The pumping station was awarded the Platinum Rating of Final Assessment under the BEAM Plus for New Buildings last December, which is a comprehensive environmental assessment scheme for buildings recognised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council.
The pumping station is part of the Sewerage Interception Scheme in Kowloon City, which was commissioned in 2012 to divert the sewage flow from Kowloon City, Lok Fu, San Po Kong and Wong Tai Sin to the To Kwa Wan Preliminary Treatment Works.
