Inquiry launched on tainted water

July 17, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung has launched a commission of inquiry to investigate lead contamination in the water supply of some housing estates.

Announcing the move today, Mr Leung said the study will be independent and comprehensive, headed by a judge.

It will determine the causes of the contamination, evaluate the drinking water control system, and make recommendations to ensure the safety of Hong Kong's drinking water.

It will look into the water supply system in both public and private buildings, including their design, installation and use of materials.

The question of responsibility will also be covered.

Mr Leung said the Government will decide the commission’s membership as soon as possible and determine the exact terms of reference in consultation with its chairman.

He said the commission will not affect the work of the task force chaired by the Deputy Director of Water Supplies established earlier and the review committee to be set up by the Housing Authority. However, their study results will provide reference for the commission.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung said the Government will consider further expanding water tests to more housing estates after finishing checks at the 10 estates identified earlier.
