'Flash mob' protests denounced

October 16, 2014

Assistant Commissioner for Transport Albert Su today condemned “flash mob” protesters for suddenly setting up roadblocks on Arsenal Street, Lung Wo Road, Pedder Street and Connaught Road Central last night.

Speaking at a press conference today, he said their actions seriously affected road safety and disrupted traffic.

The protesters jeopardised their own safety and that of other road users, he said, adding buses and cars were trapped.

Bus passengers were forced to stay on buses for hours or to get off and walk, which he said was unfair to them.

Assistant Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Olivia Chan urged protesters to leave the streets and move to parks to minimise the disruption to other people.

She said Tamar Park, the Central & Western District Promenade, Victoria Park’s Central Lawn, and MacPherson Playground have sufficient space to accommodate all protesters, and her department is willing to co-ordinate and accommodate their requests.
