MTR plays crucial role during protests

October 03, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung and Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung visited the MTR Operations Control Centre in Tsing Yi today, to see the centre’s daily operations and learn how the Occupy Central movement has disrupted transport in recent days.

The centre monitors the railway network’s operation. MTR Operations Director Jacob Kam told Mr Leung train services have been increased as some transit stations are particularly busy, especially Admiralty, North Point and Kowloon Tong stations, where passenger numbers have significantly increased.

Mr Leung spoke with the MTR staff and said he understood demand for train services during peak hours had risen as nearly half of all bus routes had been suspended.

Mr Leung said the MTR plays a crucial role during this period of time, and thanked the MTR staff for their hard work. He urged protesters to leave peacefully and not to block public roads so public transport could resume normal as soon as possible.
