Transport experts have endorsed the Government's proposal to raise the mandatory requirement for using child restraint devices.
The Transport Advisory Committee was today consulted on the plan, which includes carrycots, child safety seats, and booster seats for private cars.
The committee agreed the proposal will better protect child car passengers.
The current legislation requires that a child aged less than three must be restrained by an approved device when travelling in the front seat of a car.
After studying medical advice and overseas practices, the Government has tabled four options that will raise the age requirement and introduce a height requirement for mandatory use of these devices in the front and rear seats of cars.
The proposed height requirement ranges from 1.35 to 1.5 metres, and the age requirement is from eight to 11-years-old.
The Government will also strengthen education and publicity on the use of the devices.
