Housing chief: more living space needed
September 08, 2013
Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung says housing quality is important, but a focus on increasing quantity should take priority now, given the acute shortage of housing.
Prof Cheung told reporters today housing quality includes many factors, such as environmental standards, infrastructure, transport and community facilities. In terms of per capita space though, Hong Kong lags behind other major cities.
"So if we aim to improve the quality of housing in Hong Kong, then we must strive to increase gradually the living space of individuals. But, at the moment, given the rather acute shortage of housing, I think quantity, number, unavoidably has to come first," he said.
This aim of improving individual living space is reflected in the recently released consultation document, which suggests starting with public housing allocation.
The Long Term Housing Strategy Steering Committee will submit a report to the Government after the consultation ends on December 2.
Prof Cheung said the Housing Authority will consider the idea of a living standard requirement if it is supported by the community during the three-month consultation period.
