Flyover space to become arts venue
November 06, 2012
An area underneath the Kwun Tong Bypass will be transformed into an informal arts and culture venue, which will open to the public early next year, in the Energising Kowloon East Office’s place-making event Fly the Flyover.
Briefing the media today, Secretary for Development Paul Chan said the first development is Fly the Flyover Operation 1, which has a site area of 3,300 square metres.
The venue can be used for activities like concerts and exhibitions. Facilities, including a stage, a backstage area, and toilets will be provided.
The first concert there will be held on January 20, featuring up to 30 young bands.
Mr Chan said the Government wants to establish eastern Kowloon as a second central business district, adding its supply of commercial buildings will double that of Central.
He said he attended a District Council meeting and listened to the councillors’ views which he said were inspiring and useful.
Meanwhile, Mr Chan said the Government will not invite tenders for redeveloping the West Wing of the former Central Government Offices before the assessment of the building is announced, meaning tenders will not be invited at the end of this year as scheduled.
He added the Government has been listening to people’s views and is exploring ways to conserve the building while meeting demand.
