The Centre for Food Safety today banned the import of oysters for raw consumption harvested in coastal waters of British Columbia in Canada as well as brown crabs from the Isle of Anglesey in the United Kingdom.
The ban of oyster was imposed after the Canadian authorities announced the possibility of oyster contamination by Vibrio parahaemolyticus in coastal waters on or before yesterday.
The ban on crabs was imposed after two brown crab samples from the UK area were found to have excessive metallic contaminant cadmium, 15 parts per million and 22 ppm, exceeding the legal limit of 2 ppm.
The centre has informed the two importers of the irregularity. As one of the importers’ products have entered the market, it has instructed the importer to initiate a recall while tracing distribution of the items.
It also called on the trade to stop using or selling the affected products and on consumers to stop consuming them.
