Health chief eases poultry fears

(January 08, 2015)

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said the Ta Kwu Ling checkpoint will be used only as a contingency measure when the Cheung Sha Wan poultry wholesale market is closed.

Dr Ko told reporters today that only local live chickens will be kept at the checkpoint, as their quarantine arrangements are different than those for Mainland poultry.

He has appointed Under Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan to communicate with Ta Kwu Ling residents to address their concerns.

Responding to suggestions that the checkpoint be moved, Dr Ko stressed that stringent quarantine, infection and pollution control measures have been adopted to minimise any adverse impact, adding that since the site will handle only local chickens, its health risk is low.

He also said the Government will continue talking to the poultry trade about when to resume the local live chicken supply.
