Youth issues to be discussed

November 29, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung says there are multiple reasons for the Occupy Central movement, and the Commission on Poverty will discuss how to respond to young people’s demands.

Speaking to the media today, Mr Leung said youngsters joining the occupation movement have various demands, covering areas like politics, career and livelihood.

He hopes a newly formed committee within the commission will discuss youth needs in education, career and training, to enhance their mobility and alleviate their grievances.

This does not mean the Government will not work on other areas, he said, adding it has all along been happy to discuss constitutional development with society and young people on the basis of the Basic Law and National People’s Congress decisions.

He said he is determined to implement universal suffrage so everyone can vote in the Chief Executive election if the constitutional reform proposal is passed.

Speaking on the city’s poverty issue, he said it is helpful that society now recongises the problem, which is a step in alleviating it.

The poverty line is useful to assess the magnitude of the problem and to evaluate the effectiveness of policies, Mr Leung said, adding the Government will continue to provide incentives to help people help themselves.
